Without doubt the most exciting Wheelchair Sport is basketball. Very similar to able-bodied basketball, there are minor variances on the rules.   It is played with the same size basketballs and same height ring as running basketball. In the state competition, the able-bodied are allowed to play, but any national or international competition requires players to have a disability to play.

Players are classified between 1.0 points to 4.5 points, and each team is allowed 14 points on the court at once.   The rules are much the same as running basketball, with some slight differences allowing for wheelchairs.

The main difference to the rules is that players are only allowed to push the wheel(s) twice before having to dribble. They can then place the ball on their lap and take two more pushes before having to dribble again.

Wheelchair Basketball provides a lot of excitement for spectators and players alike, and our local competition is a great way to meet new friends and keep fit.

The sport of Wheelchair Basketball is governed by the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation.   The rules of wheelchair basketball can be downloaded by clicking here.
