Athletics has two components - track and field.
Track has been made famous by world champion, Perth's own, Louise Sauvage. Athletes compete in varying race lengths from 100m - 10,000m as well as Marathon distance events. Track chairs are made in a streamline shape, with two wheels at the back and one at the front. Wheelchair Sports WA also caters for ambulent runners.
Field comprises of javelin, discus and shotput. Athletes may compete in a sitting position, where a specially designed frame is used to balance the thrown, or a standing position. Bruce Wallrodt is a world champion in field, and Athens 2004 will mark his 5th Paralympics.
In athletics each athlete is given a classification which enables athletes to compete with others who have a similar disability. More information can be found under classification.
