Wheelchair Rugby is played on a basketball court, by people whose disability affects both lower and upper limbs (such as quadriplegics). Rugby is a 4-per-side game with the object being to carry the ball over the goal line.
The game is similar to wheelchair basketball with games being played on a basketball court. A tip off similar to basketball starts the game, the ball must be dribbled every 10 seconds and a cross court rule similar to that of basketball also exists.
Chair contact is allowed, however body contact is not. If a player commits a foul, they are sent to the penalty box for 1 minute. Players are classified from 0.5 (most disabled) – 3.5 (least disabled). Teams may only have 8 points on the court at one time.
WA is represented in the National Wheelchair Rugby League by the West Coast Enforcers.
Local Competition is played on a Thursday night from 7pm - 9pm at the Herb Garhaam Recreation Centre, Mirrabooka. Two teams fight it out providing some exciting competition full of bangs, crashes and spills. Why not come down and check it out?
