The Perth Wheelcats are Wheelchair Sports WA's representatives in the National Wheelchair Basketball League.
In their first season, 2001, the team finished third - heartbreakingly losing a preliminary final by 1 point to miss out on the Grand Final. The team was coached by Frank Ponta.
In 2002, big changes led to a premiership. The aquisition of Japanese import player, Hiroshi Iwano and the comeback of Paralympian Mandy Bonavita brought instant results. Shaun Norris won finals series MVP as the Wheelcats exacted revenge on the West Sydney Razorbacks in the Grand Final. The team was coached by Max Bovey.
In 2003, a relatively unchanged line-up won bronze again - losing to eventual champions, Wollongong RollerHawks in the Preliminary final despite a big comeback in the second half of the game.
In 2004, another new coaching staff takes the reigns in what will be a very different line-up. State Basketball League player, Ben Ettridge will take on the role of head coach, and his assistant will be his father, Paralympian and state wheelchair basketball coach, Len. Star players Brad Ness and Justin Eveson will miss a majority of the season playing professionally in Italy and representing Australia, which will provide the opportunity for young, developing athletes to make their mark.
